Being Clever

Authors Note: This is my response to "The Glorious Whitewasher". I'm trying to make my writing more specific.I hope you like it.

Cleverness can be a blessing or a curse. If used the right way it can help you learn, but if used the wrong way you can manipulate people into doing exactly what you want. Tom  Sawyer Demonstrated this in "The Glorious Whitewasher" when he used his cleverness to get people to Whitewash or give him a toy.  Tom uses his cleverness to make people to everything.

At one point Tom asks If he can take the water down for Jim if he whitewashes some of the fence.  Jim thinks he will get yelled at if he lets Tom take it down. Tom told him that he would let him see his bad toe and with that Jim agreed to whitewash the fence. This is a how Tom is clever, he almost bribes people to do what he wants.

Another time he used reverse psychology to get Ben to whitewash the fence. Tom told Ben that no one else could whitewash the fence. All Tom wanted was for Ben to give him his apple. Ben finally agreed to give him his whole apple and Ben whitewashed the fence for him. Reverse Psychology is used a lot in the world, mostly by parents to get there kids to do something.

Tom Sawyer Is a very clever character and an get people to do anything. He gets anything he wants and gets things done by using other people. When used for good cleverness can help understand many school topics. Otherwise, cleverness is a bad thing when Tom sawyer is in charge.

 Something Bad

Authors Note: This is my response on "The Circuit". I'm trying to get rid of pronouns and make my writing more specific. I hope you like it.

There's always bad a situation happening when you don't want it to. People move when they don't want to. Realizing this came in "The Circuit" The boy in the story moved to a new city at one random point. He was sad that he would leave all of his friends and his home and just move to another house in another city in a completely different place. Moving always stinks, to most people. Leaving school and friends behind because of a parents job happens all the time and is never easy to do.

I had to move from Wisconsin to Colorado because of my dad's job. I didn't know better because I was 3 years old. My family would visit Wisconsin every year for around a week. I really wanted to move back to Wisconsin for the first two years but then I started to like Colorado. We ended up living in Colorado for five years and then we got the news that we were moving back to Wisconsin. I couldn't believe it. I was both happy and sad. Dad, Mom, and I started packing our clothes and other important items into the car. The rest of our furniture went into the moving van.We were leaving the house when I remembered something -- it was the day before my birthday when we moved. I was silent the entire time. I was really sad the entire trip back to Wisconsin.

Leaving school and friends behind is hard. People who have moved have experienced that feeling. Its one of things that you will end up liking until you move again.

 "All Summer in a Day"

Authors Note: This is my Report on All Summer in a Day. I worked really hard on this and I have never done a report like this before. I hope you Enjoy it!

"All Summer in a Day" is definitely a forum of irony. Margot showed us this when she missed the sun coming out for the first time in 7 years. Life is hard living up on Venus and to make things harder Margot never wanted to play with any of the kids. Most of the kids didn’t like Margot and just ignored her. Until one day when William and some other kids decided to lock her in the closet during the time of the sun.

This story never seemed really happy it was always sad and depressing. Most of the describing words were dark: grey, ash, floods, darkness, ect. That is the attribute of an irony story. Some of the evidence is that the good is weak and evil is all powerful, this is a definite attribute of this story. The story seemed like it was someone's worst nightmare and that Margot was weak and stupid. Both are attributes of irony.

The number one way to see if this story is irony is the decisions that are made. In irony the decisions are dark or bad. One of these decisions is that the parents didn't want to go back to earth because it would cost to much money so they decided  to stay instead of go back to earth like Margot wanted. Another bad decision was when William told everyone to get Margot into the closet and lock it, and they all did. Almost all of the decisions that were made in this story were bad ones.

This story is definitely a form of irony. The symbols, decisions, and events in this story all match up to irony. No one will never know what happened to Margot because the end of every irony story isn't really an ending, its more of a cliffhanger. Margot still taught us one thing, everyone should be afraid of isolation.

  1. I really like how you included a connection to the story about moving. Although a few words were misspelled or capitalized incorrectly. The essay was really nice with a great introduction

  2. Circuits-
I like how you talked about your own experience as wells as the child in the stories. You should work on using more transitions.

  3. Being Clever- I though your examples from the story were nice, but your first paragraph was kind of repetitive. I think your responses should be more about what the story was telling you, not that you can manipulate people.

  4. Tom Sawyer-

I liked how you definitely stepped up your vocabulary in this piece. You messed up on the last sentence in the first paragraph, the word should be do not to. Other than that I think you had i proficient piece. Nice job!
